No Sew Scrap Fabric Tassel Keyring
/Use long thin scraps of fabric to make an easy no sew tassel keyring.
I am a bit of a fabric scrap hoarder, I admit it! I hate to throw away even really small pieces of fabric. I tend to use my tiny scraps for small scale patchwork or projects like the scrap fabric totes or scrap fabric hanging hearts.
This no sew scrap fabric tassel keyring idea all started when I trimmed about 2” from the bottom of some summery floaty wide leg trousers. I’d had these trousers for years and they’ve always been a slightly awkward length. Not quite long enough to be full length on me unless I have bare feet but not short enough to look like they are meant to be cropped. In a mad moment the other day, and minutes before I was due to go out, I finally took the scissors to them. It took just a few minutes to hem them but rather than throwing away the offcuts I left it on my desk with a “humm, I think I can do something with those thin strips”.
Next morning I dug through my scrap fabric tub for some more long thin pieces and this tassel keyring was born.
How to make a no sew scrap fabric tassel keyring
What you need:
Strips of scrap fabric, ribbon, yarn, lace etc
A metal keyring ring
Embroidery thread
Sharp scissors
a needle or superglue - odd either/or combo I know but read on and it will make sense!
Tear your fabric scraps into lengths about 1/2” (1cm) wide. I know that 1/2” and 1cm are not the same but this is not a precise craft, your fabric strips don’t have to be all the same. Somewhere round about 1/2” OR 1cm works well.
You’ll need about 10-12 strips to make a keyring, more if you want a much fuller tassel.
Trim your lengths of scrap fabric to approximately 11” (28cm)
Add in ribbon, lace, yarn, other haberdashery bits and pieces, whatever you like for the look you are going for.
Arrange the lengths on your table so you have a pleasing mix of colours and then pinch them together and thread the bundle through your keyring ring.
Fold the fabric strips in half so the ring is in the middle.
Take a long length of embroidery thread, somewhere around 30” (75cm) Use the embroidery thread to tie a knot around the fabric bundle just below the keyring.
Wrap both end of thread around the bundle in opposite directions and knot again, this time with a double knot.
Use the long ends of embroidery thread to wrap around the fabric bundle. Use one end and then the other. Tie in a double knot.
To secure the embroidery thread you can either trim the ends near your double knot and then add a small dob of superglue. Or do what I did and thread the ends of embroidery thread onto a large needle and stitch into the thread wrapped area to “loose” the end of the thread.
Trim off any scraggly ends and that’s it! Easy as that! Your no sew scrap fabric tassel keyring is complete.
This is a great low cost craft for a craft group, summer camp, kids craft party activity or just a fun way to spend 20 minutes using some of your fabric scraps. It’s also great to use the off cuts of floaty summer trousers if you decide to turn them into cropped trousers!!!
I enjoyed making this tassel keyring so much I’ve been experimenting and have another fabric tassel idea for you next week.
