How to make a gift card envelope with button and thread closure
/Here is a cute way to give a gift card - make a special envelope for it from lovely craft paper and a button and thread fastening.
Some of the products originally used to make this envelope were provided by Pandahall.com
This envelope making tutorial was originally published in June 2015 and has been updated and republished
How to make a Gift Card Envelope with Button Fastening
You will need:
A gift card
Your choice of craft paper (mine is a lovely handmade paper I've had for years with real petals similar to this)
2 Buttons - the ones I used were from Pandahall but they don’t stock them any more. I’ve found some similar decorative buttons at Amazon here, here and here
Embroidery thread
Scissors, needle & glue
Prepare the envelope shape
Lay the gift card centrally on the paper and fold around it in all directions
Cut away the corners as shown in the photo above
Cut or punch 2 circles of paper from the corner scraps to reinforce the buttons on the inside
Fold the envelope up and mark in pencil where the two buttons will go to form the closure (the red blobs in the photo are just so you can see them, you want to just do faint pencil marks!)
Attach the buttons
You are going to add the button closures before you glue the envelope together, it’s much easier to stitch the buttons in place whilst the paper is flat.
Using 2 strands of embroidery thread sew the buttons in the 2 spots you’ve just marked.
The button is positioned on the right of the paper with the paper circle on the wrong side. You might find it easier to secure the paper circle in place with a tiny spot of glue before you stitch
Start and finish on the inside so you can tie the ends in a knot, trim the excess thread
Be careful to only make two holes in the paper for each button, you don't want to perforate the paper too much
Glue the side flaps of the envelope and fold it up, pressing well
Take a length of thread, again 2 strands. Somewhere around 20cm or 8” is about right and tie it around the threads under the button on the flap of the envelope, between the envelope and the button.
Pop your gift card inside then seal up the envelope by wrapping the long thread round and round the two buttons.
I love the wooden tree buttons with this textured paper, you could try any combination of papers and buttons and get a totally different look.
This button envelope worked well for a birthday present gift card last week when I just didn't have time to make a separate birthday card, it made the shop's gift card feel just a little bit more special.
More ideas to use an envelope with button and thread closure
An envelope like this with button and thread closure isn’t just for gift cards, you could use one to hold:
jewellery
a few packets of seeds for the garden
someone’s favourite tea bags
a special birthday card
money
