Sock Creature Kit Review

Today I’m here with a review of the lovely craft kit from Sock Creatures.

I received a free kit from Sock Creatures in return for my honest review.

Sock Creatures have taken the idea of a sock monkey and ran with it. They have dozens of different creatures available from Llamas to Narwhals, Flamingoes to Dragons. Each creature is available in a selection of colours too.

I choose the sausage dog kit in rainbow mix.

The kit arrived quickly, the packaging is cute, a paper bag, with smaller zip lock plastic bags inside which include everything you need to make your sock creature, the only thing you need to provide is scissors. There was a little mini pack of love heart sweets in there too, something to keep my strength up whilst I worked on my sock toy!

The instructions are clear and easy to follow and my rainbow sausage dog toy came together really easily.

I stitched my sausage dog together by hand, using backstitch. They do say in the FAQ’s that you can make them on a sewing machine but the little bits would be really fiddly and actually, it was nice to sit and do a little hand sewing.

Isn’t he a cutie?

The hardest bit was knowing how much to stuff him. The socks are pretty stretchy and so you could keep going and going and make a really plump toy! On reflection i think I could have made his head a little bigger/fuller and maybe his butt just a fraction smaller but I think he is adorable just as he is!

The only other slightly tricky bit was the face. It’s SO important to get that right when making a toy, its whole personality is determined by the face, right? So if you get it wrong your toy might be just a little bit scared or worried or sad for the rest of its life! Technically it wasn’t difficult, it is possible that this is just me over thinking!! His face is pretty cute isn’t it?

If you were making this for a small child you could easily swap the button eyes for safety eyes, felt or just embroidery them on.

The only thing I did a little different from the pattern was to add a gathering stitch around the top of his back legs so they looked similar to his front legs. Probably completely unnecessary, but as my sausage dog has a considerable bottom I thought it might help him look more in proportion. But of course, that is the beautiful of making something yourself, you can make it your own in any way you like.

These kits are recommended for adults and children aged 8 and up, with advice that children under 14 would need to be supervised. Sounds like good guidance to me, although I guess it depends a lot on the child and what sewing experience they have.

Sock Creatures ship internationally, check out their website for all the details.

Thank you Sock Creatures, I loved making a rainbow sock sausage dog toy.
