3D Wooden Flower Puzzle Kit Review
/The lovely folks at Rolife recently gifted me a couple of their beautiful 3D wooden puzzle kits to make wooden flowers to test out and give an honest review.
I chose the Moth Orchid Kit and the Wooden Flower Bouquet kit.
I started with the Moth Orchid Kit as it is a smaller. I figured less pieces means less chance to go wrong, right? Once that was made and I was feeling more confident I worked on the flower bouquet.
First thoughts about the 3D wooden puzzle kits
The packaging is lovely. The Moth Orchid Kit came in a pretty printed card envelope that’s 24cm x 16cm x 1cm (9.5” x 6.5” x 3/8”) so it would be perfect for posting as a gift - very letterbox friendly.
The wooden bouquet came in a larger box obviously, there’s a lot more pieces in that kit.
Inside the sheets of wooden shapes for the individual flower types are wrapped separately in plastic film. We all try to avoid plastic these days so it’s not ideal, but having them separated does help a lot with construction. I would have struggled to find the right pieces if they were all just bundled in together.
The pieces are cut into wooden sheets, you just pop them out GENTLY. The sheets are labeled but the writing is pretty small so you do need good light when you’re making your flowers. Each kit comes with cardboard “extras” that you can mix and match plus a bit of sandpaper from removing tiny snags on the wooden pieces.
Following the Instructions
The kits also come with full instructions of course. They are detailed but manageable if you pay attention. I would be lying if I said they were easy to follow though and I did promise an honest review.
I made my first moth orchid bloom, thought it looked great then realised I’d put it together completely back to front! All the information you need is there in the instructions so my mistakes were totally my error. You really do need to check and double check which way round you have the pieces, there is often a right and wrong side.
Left is wrong, right is right: See the lines on the petals that I didn’t notice at first. Rookie Mistake!
I found as I went along I got used to the way the instructions indicated important little details to me and it got much easier to follow. They are even kind enough to put a big ol’ warning sign on any steps where you are likely to go wrong.
Potential Mistakes
I found most of my mistakes were putting pieces into place back to front. This was easily fixable, you can gently release pieces if you find they are wrong.
I did break a couple of delicate pieces. One was fine because there are a few spares in the kits, but you can’t rely on that completely, only some of the pieces have spares. I broke the bottom of one petal on my rose with no spare so I just used a little glue to hold that bit in place - the only glue on my whole bouquet.
It is easy to mistake one piece for another that looks similar. You really do need to check the numbers on the wooden sheets and pieces and cross check everything with the instructions. One petal can look very like another but might make the next step impossible because it sticks out at a different angle for example.
Is it fun to make the 3D wooden flower puzzles?
Oh Yes!
I found the whole thing totally addictive. The number of times I made dinner late because I wanted to add “just one more piece” was bonkers.
It is so satisfying when you finish another flower or stem. I did a lot of holding a flower up and twizzling it slowly to admire how clever I was!!
Who are these kits suitable for?
Age wise the packaging recommends 8+. Unless your child is exceptionally good at jigsaws, model making, being careful with delicate things etc I think this kind of kit would be really frustrating for them.
I’d also not recommend them for anyone with dexterity issues. I think it would be very difficult to get a good result if your fingers are not nimble. The pieces are too easy to break and the whole thing could get really frustrating.
They are perfect for anyone who has good attention to detail, loves getting lost in a craft project and likes fiddly little things.
Just to give you an idea of the spares and extras you get let me show you the flower bouquet kit after I’d finished.
You get a lot of extras in the bouquet kit because it’s actually 5 smaller kits in 1 with lots of printed cardboard shapes and vase so you can use the flowers separately or all together in a bouquet.
My Finished Wooden Flowers
The finished wooden flowers are really beautiful, I’m so pleased with how they all turned out.
I’m keeping the Moth Orchid for myself and I’ve given the bouquet to my mother in law. She likes artificial flowers as they are much easier for her to look after these days.
Thank you Rolife for the chance to review a couple of your 3D Flower Craft kits. They have all sorts of kits including book nooks, miniature houses and all sorts of 3D puzzles like the ones I chose.
